Background

Astaxanthin is a naturally happening powerful antioxidant and also a powerful carotenoid pigment found in trout, microalgae, yeast, shrimp, and in certain marine plants and animals and in the feathers of some birds. Generally, it provides the red color of salmon meat and the red color of cooked shellfish. It was professor Basil Weedon’s group who first proved the structure of astaxanthin by synthesis, in 1975.[1] Unlike some other types of antioxidants, astaxanthin never becomes a pro-oxidant in the body and that’s why it may not cause harmful oxidation.

It is recommended to stop supplementing with astaxanthin at least two weeks before any scheduled surgical treatment. It is also recommended that pregnant and nursing women should not use astaxanthin supplements due to a lack of sufficient research.
