L-glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in the body. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Glutamine is produced in the muscles and is distributed by the blood to the organs that need it. Glutamine might help gut function, the immune system, and other essential processes in the body, especially in times of stress. It is also important for providing “fuel” (nitrogen and carbon) to many different cells in the body. Glutamine is needed to make other chemicals in the body such as other amino acids and glucose (sugar).Again, glutamine is found abundantly in the central nervous system (CNS) where it participates in a variety of metabolic pathways. Its major role in the brain is that of a precursor of the neurotransmitter amino acids: the excitatory amino acids, glutamate (Glu) and aspartate (Asp), and the inhibitory amino acid, γ-amino butyric acid (GABA). It also appears to affect neurotransmission directly by interacting with the NMDA class of glutamine receptors. Transmission may also be modulated by alterations in cell membrane polarity related to the electrogenic nature of glutamine transport or to uncoupled ion conductances in the neuronal or glial cell membranes elicited by glutamine transporters. In addition, glutamine appears to modulate the synthesis of the gaseous messenger, nitric oxide (NO), by controlling the supply to the cells of its precursor, arginine. Disturbances of glutamine metabolism and/or transport contribute to changes in glutamine-ergic or GABA-ergic transmission associated with different pathological conditions of the brain, which are best recognized in epilepsy, hepatic encephalopathy and manganese encephalopathy.[19]

L-Glutamin Recomendations, Safety, and Dosage

L-Glutamine is possibly safe for most adults and children when taken by mouth in certain amount of weight daily. As not enough information is known about the use of glutamine during pregnancy and breast-feeding, stay on the safe side and avoid using glutamine in such situation. Also avoid glutamine supplements in Cirrhosis condition.
If you are sensitive to monosodium glutamate (MSG), you might also be sensitive to glutamine, because the body converts glutamine to glutamate. There is some concern that glutamine might increase the likelihood of seizures in some people. So, avoid using in such condition.
Consult your doctor or healthcare provider to start any new supplements. A suitable dosage for L-glutamine is ingestion between 2 to 5 grams twice daily, and up to 10 grams daily for serious power athletes. For reducing mouth soreness due to chemotherapy, glutamine suspension may be 4 grams, swish and swallow every four hours around the clock starting with the first dose of chemotherapy and continued until hospital discharge or resolution of symptoms.
Again, for HIV wasting, the dosage can be 8-40 grams per day. However, 40 grams daily may work best.
When used intravenously (by IV) in doses up to 600 milligrams per kilogram of weight daily can go. You should seek the help of your physician for determining a suitable dose for you.
