What is L-Citruline

L-Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid normally produced by the body. The body converts L-citrulline to L-arginine, another type of amino acid which improves blood flow by creating nitric oxide (NO). The name Citrulline comes from the Latin word citrullus meaning watermelon fruit which contains large amounts of the amino acid (1.1- 4.7 mg/g).[2] L-Citrulline supplement is most popularly used for sports performance, cardiovascular health, certain neurodegenerative conditions and more. Supplementing L-citrulline can help reduce fatigue and improve endurance for both aerobic and anaerobic prolonged exercise. The supplementation also increases ornithine and arginine plasma content meaning that it helps improve the ammonia recycling process and nitric oxide metabolism. How L citruline works

L-Citrulline is one of the three dietary amino acids in the urea cycle, alongside L-arginine and L-Ornithine. The urea cycle converts a toxic compound which is known as ammonia into urea, and then it’s eliminated from the body through urine. When it is consumed, L-citrulline is converted to L-arginine by the kidneys and is released into the bloodstream by the kidneys in order that it is available to the whole body.[18[19] L-Citrulline becomes the pre-cursor to L-Arginine. Nitric oxide synthase produces nitric oxide from L-arginine. This nitric oxide plays an important role in the immune system and heart and blood vessel health. And most of the benefits of L-citrulline are because of L-arginine and nitric oxide. Getting converted into nitric acid, this compound further enhances blood flow through arteries. In the brain, the functions help support healthy neural function, especially because it pertains to memory.

L-Citrulline is possibly considered very safe, and has no known side effects. However, it is important that you should not combine it with prescription medications for high blood pressure. Remember, adding this supplement may reduce blood pressure to dangerous levels.
