DMHA

What is DMHA

DMHA, also commonly known as Octodrine and scientifically termed as Dimethylhexylamine or 2-aminoisoheptane, is a central nervous stimulant that increases the uptake of dopamine and noradrenaline. DMHA is called as the pre-workout stimulant as well as ‘fat-burner’ supplement. [1] Actually, DMHA is an extract which is believed to be derived from the fruit of the Kigelia Africana plant and has been a part of the South, central and West African diet since prehistoric times. Though it was initially used as a drug for nasal congrestion, nowadays it is included as an ingredient used as dietary supplements to boost workout performance, burn fat, or increase weight loss. DMHA seems to be similar to another stimulant called dimethylamylamine (DMAA) which has been removed from the market in the USA and some other countries due to safety concerns.[2]

DMHA health Benefits

As a nootropic, DMHA has the ability to influence the release of dopamine and norepinephrine – the two hormones responsible for making you “feel good” and allows you to perform in stressful situations and has been shown to play a role in long term memory and cognitive functions. DMHA has numerous health benefits. It performs various analogous functions to other psychoactive central nervous system stimulants such as it improves energy levels and cognitive function, reduces appetite and promotes bronchodilation. The common health benefits of DMHA include:Increases workout performance [3] Works as a fat-burner [4] Improves cognitive function [5] Increases concentration [6] Promotes weight loss [7]Anecdotal reports say that DMHA has great effects inEnhancing energy levels Improving athletic performance Improving mood Increasing motivation Improves memory Reducing fatigue Suppressing appetite Relieving pain Reducing inflammation Helps people who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorderDMHA or octodrine is demonstrated as a DMAA-like stimulant and mainly found as a fat-burner supplement or pre-workout formula. It is also used for intensive study sessions or exam stress, positioning this molecule among the Nootropics; pharmaceuticals used to improve cognitive and executive function, memory and creativity in healthy individuals.[8]

How DMHA works

DMHA is thought to have stimulant effects which are similar to decongestants such as pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and others. There are some people who say that DMHA is a safer alternative to ephedrine and dimethylamylamine. However, there is not enough scientific information to back up this claim. Whether it is DMHA or DMAA or AMP citrate, it has a methyl group on the alpha carbon that inhibits the activity of the monoamine oxidase enzyme which is responsible for the degradation of monoamines in the body. The methyl group also helps enhance the amphiphilic nature of DMHA which makes the compound both hydrophilic and hydrophobic. The increased lipid solubility of DMHA helps improve its absorption through the blood brain barrier. It also increases the stimulating affinity for the catecholamine transporters and this increase in affinity for these transporters alleviates the reuptake of epinephrine and norepinephrine.

Consideration and recomendation

DMHA has some possible effects like DMAA which is another stimulant that might cause serious side effects, including heart attack and death. If you have high blood pressure, you should not take it. Also, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you are advised to avoid using DMHA. Due to having stimulant effects, it may cause rapid heartbeat. It also may worsen some types of glaucoma. So consult your physician before using this supplement.

DMHA is considered a very effective supplement for pre-workout formula as well as for cognitive function. The appropriate dose of DMHA depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. However, an effective and safe dose of DMHA may be 1mg/kg of body weight. It is recommended to apply 30-60 minutes before workout, 2-3 hours after the meal.
