There are evidences that, when you take artichoke extract alongside an herb called Forskolin, the mixture can yield significant nootropic effects including higher rates of synaptic generation between neurons, improved memory capacity, and increased ability to retain new information.

How it works

Artichoke Extract has a naturally occurring component called luteolin which is a powerful phosphodiesterase (PDE4) inhibitor. This PDE4 is an enzyme which generally breaks down cAMP, a messenger system which is required for cell communication. Hence, inhibiting PDE4 may increase cAMP function in the brain. Again, in a study the researchers investigated the effect of luteolin on immune system cells in the brain called microglia that produces cytokines in response to infections and toxins. It is true that over-production of cytokines results in inflammation and the destruction of neurons. The researchers pretreated brain cells in animals with luteolin before being exposed to an element that induced inflammation in brain cells. The same type of inflammation human beings may experience from daily exposure to toxins. The study concluded that luteolin provides protection against brain inflammation. As a result, it cannot cause any problems with cognition and memory. The researchers settled it saying that luteolin may be useful for alleviating neural inflammation.

Considerations

Artichoke Extract is usually safe. However, in some people, it may cause side effects like gas, upset stomach, and diarrhea. It may also cause allergic reactions in people who are at the greatest risk of allergic reactions to some herbs. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should avoid taking artichoke extract. This supplement can make gallstones and bile duct obstruction worse by increasing bile flow. So, you are suggested to consult your healthcare provider before using this supplement.
